This book exists because the arithmetic of a theft has never been done in public. The extraction of African wealth into European and corporate hands is documented, and the documentation is the extractor's own. The records that would have documented the extraction from the African side were destroyed, dispersed, or never written. The consequence is that the surviving evidence is one-sided, and the account has never been completed. The book does not attempt to complete the account. The account cannot be completed with the surviving evidence alone, because the evidence that would have completed it is the evidence that was destroyed. The book does what can be done: it assembles the surviving evidence, it grades it, it states the method, it computes the ranges, and it makes the demand that a body with the power to compel disclosure now finish the work.

In this little book, I have gathered three versions of his quatrains for you. First, FitzGerald's Victorian translation, with all its flair and its liberties, because it is beautiful and because it is the version that made Khayyam famous in the English-speaking world. Second, a literal prose translation, so you can hear what Khayyam actually said, as close to the Persian as I could bring it. And third, a plain prose rendering, so the meaning is clear and simple, without the ornaments of verse.

This volume covers 1650–1800, with controlled overruns: the 1629 Mutapa treaty that frames the fiscal inversion; Campbell and Kay in 1820–21, who first walk Kaditshwene; Thulamela and Mapungubwe as reception of earlier states; Farini in 1885 as a control case of invented stone. Each overrun is labelled in the chapter that uses it. The book has three parts. Part I reads the European files that do exist — VOC inland paper, the first British occupation (WO 1, not CO 48), early LMS journals — and states what they do not contain. Part II reads the stone: Kaditshwene, Marothodi, Molokwane, Bokoni, then Mapungubwe/Thulamela as twentieth-century knowledge politics, and the Kalahari “lost city” as geology plus desire. Part III reads the Cuama system: river nodes, feiras, kuruva and empata, the 1629 paper, Dombo’s war, Conceição, Dambarare’s churchyard, Zumbo, the Jesuit–Dominican–Augustinian split, and the 1759 cut.
